Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that an aggregate of Rs 64.05 crore were disbursed to the 370 tea gardens under the Assam Tea Industry Special Incentive Schemes 2020, originally formulated by the Government of Assam to mitigate the adverse impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the tea industry.

Assam is the largest producer of tea in the country, the budget presented by Assam finance minister, Ajanta Neog on Thursday stated that Assam Tea Industries Special Incentives Scheme (ATISIS), 2020 will be further strengthened to incentivize the production of orthodox tea and specialty tea in Assam.

Tea plantation is highly climate dependent. Climate change and global warming have adversely affected tea plantation in Assam for last few years. It has reached to such a level that without irrigation, tea plantations are finding it difficult to survive. Climate change is one of the top five challenges of the tea industry in Assam.

Renowned globally for its richly coloured and aromatic tea, Assam, the country's largest tea producer provides livelihood to millions with many others directly or indirectly dependent on the plantation sector. Assam now produces nearly 700 million kg of tea annually and accounts for around half of India's overall tea production. The state also generates annual foreign exchange earnings estimated at an equivalent to Rs 3,000 crore.

Production in the north-eastern state of Assam, which accounts for more than half the country's production, dropped 20% year on year to 89.60 million kg, the board said. Tea plucking in India, the world's second-biggest tea producer, usually accelerates from June to October.

The draft proposal of Tea policy includes components like replacements of old plants and machinery, financial assistance for opening tea boutiques, new blending and packaging industries, participating in trade fairs national and international, Quality Certification for ISO/HACCP, Organic Tea Certification of the factory, export support for sending tea directly from Assam to overseas country etc.

Patanjali MD Balkrishna stated that Patanjali will work with Industries and Commerce Department to promote medicinal plantation in Assam and buy back from farmers for their products manufactured in Sonitpur and Haridwar.

Bidyananda Barkakoty, Adviser, North Eastern Tea Association (NETA), “On one hand the price realisation of tea is lower by Rs. 44.19 per kg, which is about 18% lower compared to last year and on the other hand, the cost of Production (CoP) has gone up due to hike in wages and inputs. CoP has gone up by Rs. 25.00 per kg of made tea due to recent hike in daily cash wage from Rs 167.00 to Rs 205.00."

The registration on behalf of the workers will be done by headmen of a line, manager or the officer-in-charge of vaccination. The second wave has severely affected tea estates with almost half of them recording Covid cases.

“The year 2021 has been an unusual year so far for the Assam tea industry as far as tea production is concerned. A study has been carried out to assess the crop loss due to the impact of prolonged drought like situation. This study has also taken into account the rainfall received in the last few days”, said Bidyananda Barkakoty, Adviser, North Eastern Tea Association (NETA).

There are around 10 lakh workers engaged in Assam’s gardens that produce 700-750 million kilograms of black tea annually. The producers are worried that if Covid spreads rapidly, as is being seen elsewhere in the country, then things may go out of control.
